Polymerization is a process of converting monomer or a mixture of monomers into a polymer. This process is common in the olefin and petrochemical plants where several polymers are being produced with different processes.

During polymerization reactions, depending on multiple factors, such as flow rates, temperature, fluid properties etc. could cause severe fouling in the process equipment. The fouling potential rise twice with every 10 deg. C rise in the temperature.

The major area of fouling observed in these industries are reboilers. Reboilers boil the liquid from the bottom of distillation column to generate vapours which are being recirculated to the column to maintain the distillation process.

Among different types of reboilers, a forced circulation type is typically vertical heat exchanger with the process stream entering from the bottom of tube side and steam / or hot oil is on shell side.
